Tommy Ring (hurler)

Thomas "Tommy" Ring (born 1938) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a goalkeeper and right wing-forward for the Westmeath senior team.
Born in Castlepollard, County Westmeath, Ring first excelled at hurling in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Westmeath minor team. He made his senior debut in the 1956 championship. Ring went on to play a key part for Westmeath, and won two National League (Division 2) medals.
As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Ring won one Railway Cup medal as a non-playing substitute. At club level he won one championship medal with Castlepollard and two championship medals with Kilmacud Crokes.
His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1972 championship.
Ring is widely regarded as one of Westmeath's greatest hurlers. In 2000 he was named in the right wing-forward position on the Westmeath Hurling Team of the Millennium.
He is a distant relative of Christy Ring, regarded by many as the greatest hurler of all-time.
